Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Hearts for child.

General Questions

Hearts for child is a registered nonprofit foundation dedicated to transforming the lives of children and young people across Uganda. We work through four core programme areas — education, skills development, community development, and child protection — to remove the barriers that prevent children from accessing opportunity and building better futures. Since our founding, we have reached over twelve thousand children across fourteen communities, partnering with families, schools, and local leaders to create lasting, community-driven change.
We operate across fourteen communities in Uganda, with a primary focus on the Northern and Eastern regions where need is greatest. Our programmes also extend to the Central region and the West Nile area, including refugee-hosting communities. We work through a network of partner schools, community-based organisations, and local government structures to ensure our interventions are contextually relevant and sustainably embedded within the communities we serve.

Every donation, regardless of size, directly supports our programmes and the children we serve.
As a registered nonprofit organisation, donations to Hearts for child may be tax-deductible depending on your jurisdiction and local tax regulations. We provide receipts for every contribution, which you can use for your tax records. We recommend consulting with a qualified tax professional to understand how your donation may affect your specific tax situation.
Your donation is allocated directly to our programmes, with rigorous financial controls ensuring that funds are used efficiently and transparently. We publish detailed financial statements and annual reports showing exactly how resources are deployed across our four programme areas. A small portion of each donation supports essential administrative and fundraising functions, but the overwhelming majority — typically over eighty percent — goes directly to programme delivery. Our audited financials are publicly available on our reports page.
Absolutely. When you visit our donate page, simply select the "Give Monthly" option. Recurring donations provide the reliable, predictable funding that allows us to plan ahead, scale our programmes, and make long-term commitments to the communities we serve. Yes. Every donation is acknowledged with a receipt sent to the email address you provide. This receipt includes all the information needed for your records and for tax purposes. Programmes & Impact

We deliver programmes across four interconnected areas: Education — providing scholarships, learning materials, mentorship, and school support to keep children in school and learning; Skills Development — equipping young people with digital literacy, vocational training, and entrepreneurship skills; Community Development — supporting community-led initiatives that strengthen livelihoods, infrastructure, and local governance; and Child Protection — creating safe environments, raising awareness, and providing support for children at risk of violence, abuse, and exploitation. Visit our Our Work page for detailed information.
We employ a robust monitoring, evaluation, and learning framework that tracks every programme from inception to outcome. This includes baseline assessments at the start of each programme, quarterly progress reviews against established targets, annual independent evaluations conducted by external experts, and community feedback mechanisms that ensure the voices of beneficiaries shape our direction. Our impact data is published transparently and is available on our Impact page and in our annual reports.
To date, we have directly reached over 12,480 children across our programme areas. Additionally, we have trained over 3,200 young people through our skills development programmes, supported 84 schools, and reached 27 communities. These numbers represent individual lives touched — children who have received scholarships, young people who have gained employable skills, and families who have benefited from stronger, more resilient communities.
Community selection is based on a rigorous needs assessment process that considers multiple factors: poverty indicators, school enrolment and retention rates, child protection concerns, existing infrastructure, community readiness and leadership, and the potential for sustainable impact. We prioritise underserved areas where our interventions can make the most significant difference. Importantly, we do not impose programmes on communities — we partner with them, ensuring that initiatives are community-led and aligned with local priorities.

Volunteering

We offer a range of volunteer opportunities designed to accommodate different skills, interests, and availability. You can apply through our volunteer page. The process begins with an online application, followed by a conversation with our volunteer coordinator to understand your goals and match you with a suitable placement. We offer both in-person and remote volunteering options across teaching, mentoring, skills training, community engagement, and professional support roles.
Requirements vary depending on the role. Some positions, such as teaching or healthcare support, may require relevant professional qualifications. Other roles, such as community engagement or administrative support, prioritise enthusiasm, reliability, and a genuine commitment to our mission over formal credentials. During the application and matching process, we will discuss the specific requirements for each opportunity and help you find a role that aligns with your skills and experience.
Yes. We offer remote volunteering opportunities in areas such as virtual mentorship, digital skills training, communications and social media support, fundraising assistance, and professional consulting. These roles allow you to contribute meaningfully to our mission from anywhere in the world. Our remote volunteers are fully integrated into our team and receive the same support, orientation, and appreciation as our in-country volunteers.

Partnerships

We welcome partnerships with corporations, foundations, government agencies, academic institutions, and community-based organisations. We offer multiple partnership models including strategic multi-year alliances, programme-specific funding, employee engagement programmes, and in-kind or pro bono contributions. To explore a partnership, please visit our partner page or contact our partnerships team directly through our contact page. We will work with you to design a collaboration that aligns with your objectives and delivers measurable impact.
Partnership benefits include brand enhancement through association with a trusted, impact-driven organisation; detailed impact reporting demonstrating the tangible outcomes of your support; employee engagement opportunities that boost morale and retention; access to our network of partners and stakeholders; and recognition across our communications channels, events, and annual reports. We view our partners as true collaborators and are committed to ensuring that the relationship delivers value for all parties — especially the children and communities we serve together.

Transparency & Governance

We are committed to complete financial transparency. Our audited financial statements are published annually and are available for public review on our reports page. These statements are prepared in accordance with international accounting standards and are independently audited by a qualified external firm. We also publish detailed expenditure breakdowns showing exactly how funds are allocated across programmes, administration, and fundraising. We believe that donors have a right to know how their contributions are used, and we hold ourselves accountable to that standard.
Child safeguarding is our highest priority. We have a comprehensive Child Safeguarding Policy that governs every aspect of our operations and applies to all staff, volunteers, partners, and contractors without exception. This policy is aligned with international best practice and Ugandan legal requirements. It covers prevention, reporting, response, and accountability mechanisms. We also maintain a Code of Conduct, a Whistleblowing Policy, and Data Protection protocols. All of these documents are publicly available on our policies page.
If you have a concern about any aspect of our work — whether related to child safety, financial impropriety, misconduct, or any violation of our policies — we encourage you to report it immediately. You can do so through our contact page, by email, or by phone. All reports are treated with the utmost confidentiality and are investigated thoroughly. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for retaliation against anyone who raises a concern in good faith. Your vigilance helps us uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
